Basileus betekend koning of koninklijk. Van oorsprong is Basilicum afkomstig uit India. Het wordt in India gezien als een heilig kruid dat gewijd is aan de Hindoegoden. Ook de Egyptenaren kenden deze plant. In meerdere graftombes zijn basilicum bladeren gevonden. In Griekenland kent men de plant als geneeskrachtig kruid. Omdat basilicum na de wederopstanding rond het graf van Christus groeide, gebruiken sommige kerken het om er wijwater mee te bereiden en zetten soms potten met basilicum bij het altaar.

Basileus means king or royal. Basil is originally from India. It is seen in India as a sacred herb dedicated to the Hindu gods. The Egyptians also knew this plant. Basil leaves have been found in several Egyptian tombs. In Greece, the plant is known as a medicinal herb. Because basil grew around the tomb of Christ after the Resurrection, some churches use it to prepare holy water and sometimes put pots with basil plants at the altar.
